Drowned
Last Tuesday afternoon the Newton and McPherson mail and hack line team was drowned in attempting to cross Dry Creek, on the main hack line about five miles west of this city.  The water is said to have been only about belly deep to the horses, or ponies, but they being highly reined up, and well fatigued from a long and heavy drive, the swiftness of the current is supposed to have carried them off their feet and getting tangled in their hitchings drifted down the stream and were drowned.  The driver saved himself and the mail, and immediately set out on his return to McPherson.  The Newton Kansan, Newton, Kansas.  Thursday, May 20, 1875.  Page 3.
