J.E. Ruth and George W. Sweesy are members of the Halstead base ball club.  While both were running to catch a ball, their intelligent heads collided.  Ruth had one eye blacked and cheek bruised rather severely, while Sweesy had his nose broken and smashed very badly, his upper jaw broken in two places, and one shoulder badly injured.  Parties who have seen Sweesy say he is the worst used up baseball player he ever saw – in fact, he looks more as if he had been having a round with some prize fighter.  He has had to subsist on soup ever since the occurrence.  The Emporia Weekly News, Emporia, Kansas.  Friday, June 25, 1875.  Page 2.
