Brown, Josephus

History

In February, 1862 he enlisted in the Union army, serving as a private in Co. H, 63rd regiment, Ohio infantry. After serving about one year he was given an honorable discharge on the ground of illness. In 1863 he enlisted again, this time serving in Co. K 1st regiment, Ohio heavy artillery. He served until the end of the war. In 1871 he was married to Anna Swearingen, two daughters were born Jessie and Osa. For some years the family resided in Illinois, then in 1876 they came to Kansas settling on a farm in Barton county. In 1903 they moved to Newton. Anna died the following year. On May 11, 1905 he married Laura Miller, with whom he lived until his death.
