Col. Gregory Hoisington, 68 former Newton resident and retired Army officer died early Saturday at Santa Barbara, California. He was the son of the late Col. and Mrs. P. M. Hoisington, he was born Nov. 21, 1887 in Newton. He was graduated from Newton High School in 1906 and, after spending a year at the University of Kansas, entered West Point and was graduated from the Academy in 1911.


Col. Hoisington's three sons were graduates of the Academy.

He was married in 1913 to Josephine Suing at Spokane, Wash.

During a military career of more than 30 years, Col. Hoisington had numerous assignments in this country and overseas.

He was stationed for several months at Fort Lawton, Wash., followed by several years as an instructor at West Point. Later he was at Fort Riley and Fort Benning, Ga., and spent two years in foreign service at Manila in the Philippines.

Returning to the states he became a professor of military science at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md.

He was also assigned to duty at Madison Barracks, Sackets Harbor, N. Y., and spent several summers at Camp Perry in Ohio.

While on duty at Camp Roberts in California during World War II, Col. Hoisington suffered a heart ailment that required long hospital treatment and necessitated his retirement from active duty.

Co. and Mrs. Hoisington had been living in Santa Barbara since 1944 and traveled extensively. His death resulted from progressive difficulties with a damaged heart and allied causes.

In addition to his widow, survivors include two sons, Perry Hoisington of Washington, D. C. and Maj.Robert H. Hoiosington, stationed at Fort Benning; three daughters Maj. Elizabeth Hoisington, at the Presidio in San Francisco; Mrs. James E. (Mary Jo) Maerters of Washington, D. C., and Mrs. Edward (Nancy) Smith of Fort Riley, The oldest son Gregory, was killed in an accident in 1941.
