In order to rear his family in a land of freedom and to be free from oppressive military service, the family decided to emigrate to America. Preceded by the two older sons, Phillip and John, the family came to America in April 1884, and bought land and settled on a farm about three miles west of Burrton, Kansas. here he continued to reside until 1903 when he moved to a farm near Hitchcock, Oklahoma, where he spent three years. In 1905 he moved to Newton where he made his home until 1921, when failing health compelled him to leave his home in Newton and he and his wife went to Kansas City, Kansas, to make their home with their daughter, Mrs. Christina Haws. Shortly after their arrival in Kansas City Mrs. Bechtloff passed away and Mr. Bechtloff continued to make his home with his daughter until his death.
