DEATH OF MAYOR
WEIR C. CONRAD

Passed Away of Heart Affection
at His Home at
11:30 Today

The community was shocked about noon today to learn of the death of mayor Weir Conrad which occurred at his home on West Eighth street at half past eleven o'clock.
Mayor Conrad has been in ill health for some time, having a serious heart affliction which followed a severe attack of rheumatism some years ago. last night a physician was called and spent three hours with him and finally left him more comfortable. At ten o'clock this morning the doctor phoned Mrs. Conrad inquiring how the patient was feeling and was told he was still asleep and had not had breakfast. It was shortly after that the doctor was summoned to come quickly, but he found his patient dead.

Kansan, Thursday, April 2, 1924.

Weir C. Conrad, third son of Dr. I. D. Conrad and Mrs. Cornrad, was born in Beavertown, Pennsylvania, April 18, 1870.

In 1882 the family came to Newton and for a number of years the family home was in the large house now used as the Presbyterian (unreadable), but which then stood where the Y. M. C. A. now stands. (This is no longer there at the southwest corner of Sixth and Poplar)

He was a pupil in the grade schools of Newton, and later started the first pop factory newton possessed. I was before the days of Newton's good water, but he spent quite a sum for a recipe for treating the water of that day which made the product a good one. He sold the business later and he and his brother E. E. Conrad in partnership with the late "Fred R. Dutcher bought the dry goods stock of j. p. Ramseyer and went into business under the name of Conrad Bros. & Dutcher. E. E. Conrad sold his interest in time, but W. C. Conrad and F. R. Dutcher were partners for several years longer. He sold his interest to Henry Conner and soon after became mayor of Newton. he was elected first in 1919 and was re-elected for his second term in 1923. His health for the last few years has been such that family and physician have united in urging him to resign from public life and give himself the relaxation the condition of his heart would need. He wanted to finish the work in hand, however, the and has really lived on his will power for a long time.

On January 30, 1901, he was married to Miss Ida Grant, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Grant, and she has been his faithful and fine companion throughout the years. no little ones came to bless their home, but the little folks in the homes of his relatives and friends were always great favorites of his and they were devoted to him.

Death came the morning of April 2nd, at his home on West Eight street where he had the care of his devoted wife and sister, Mrs. Laura Conrad who had been their guest for eight months.
