Cook, Catherine

The Newton Kansan

Kansan, Tuesday, November 15, 1917

Catherine J. West was born at Richmond, Ky., October 7, 1845, and died at Newton, Kansas November 11, 1917, aged 72 years, 1 month and 4 days. Her girlhood was spent during the period prior to and during the Civil War, in a region traversed by contending armies of the North and South. Educational facilities were destroyed and property confiscated, or stolen. On one occasion she and her youngest brother, mounted on a good mule, were met by a number of Bragg's men, who ordered to dismount and trade horses. The mule was taken and an old worn out cavalry horse left instead.

March 28, 1871, she was united i n marriage to Z. T. Cook. To this union three sons were born. William E. of Whitewater, Ks., Granville C. and Raphael A. of Newton. In March 1885 the family moved to Kansas, settling on a farm near Whitewater, and remained there until April, 1909 when they moved to Newton, which since has been their home. Mrs. Cook was one of a family of ten children, and only one, Captain G. C. West of Washington, D. C., survives.
