Obituary

Virgil Elder Frey went peacefully home to be with the Lord on Monday (Sept. 27, 2010) at his family home with his loving wife of 59 years, Vernalee, by his side. Born in Newton, he was the son of the late Arthur and Mabel Elder Frey. He lived a very long and full life surrounded by loving family and friends. He often reflected on surviving the Great Depression and serving honorably in World War II. Virgil was very proud of his alma mater, Bethel College, where he graduated in 1950 with a major in natural science and minors in education and English. He was an accomplished purchasing manager for Boeing for 35 years and later rounded out his career as owner and operator of Claymont Hardware with three generations of his family. Virgil maintained a lifelong love of learning, always seeking to learn new things and cultivating new skills. In addition to being a master gardener, he loved genealogy, traveling, reading and spending time with his family. He was a longtime member of the Claymont Lions Club and the Sons of the American Revolution. He is survived by his wife; his son, Mark O. Frey; his daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Raymond F. Quinn Jr.; four devoted grandchildren, Curtis M. Frey, Emily and her husband Matt Troutman, Anastasia Quinn and Cassandra Quinn; and great-grandchildren Dean and Macy Troutman. He was preceded in death by his brother, J.R. The family will receive guests from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Gebhart Funeral Home, 3401 Philadelphia Pike in Claymont, Del. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1314 Foulk Road in Wilmington, Del. Interment will be private.
