Newton Man Killed

Chard, Jeremy

A 29-year-old Newton man was killed in a one-vehicle rollover Friday night near U.S. 50 and Meridian on the west side of Newton. Jeremy Chard was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck.

Harvey County sheriff's authorities said Chard was driving a 1999 Ford Explorer on the curving entrance ramp from Meridian to eastbound U.S. 50. The vehicle slid off the side of the road and rolled several times down an embankment on the southwest part of the ramp. Chard was not wearing a seat belt, Sheriff Byron Motter said. He was thrown from the vehicle, and his body was pinned under it when officers arrived.

The accident happened about 7:20 p.m. Chard was the only one in the vehicle at the time of the wreck. Though there was no indication of alcohol at the scene of the wreck, authorities said they will have a blood test done to determine whether Chard had been drinking.
