TRAGIC DEATH FOR A HESSTON YOUTH
Arthur Smith Electrocuted While at Work in Madison Oil Field
Additional details of the tragic death of Arthur Smith, killed while at work near Madison, Kans., Tuesday afternoon, were received here today. The young man who was past 25 years of age, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Smith of near Hesston.
It was learned that two other workmen were killed at the same time as young Smith. They were employed by the Manhattan Oil company, and were moving a telephone pole. There were four men at work on the job, when the pole tipped from some cause and came in contact with a high voltage electric line, and Smith and two others whose names could not be learned today, were instantly killed. Mr Smith's body was not badly burned but the two others were so badly burned as to be hardly recognizable, it was stated. The fourth man was knocked about thirty feet and badly stunned, but suffered no permanent injury.
Mr. Smith was brought here last night. He will be taken to the home of his parents Thursday evening. Funeral services will be conducted at the Sprinkler Mortuary Friday forenoon at 10:00 o'clock, by the Rev. A. R. Hardy, paster of the First Baptist church of this city, and interment will be made in the Greenwood cemetery.
Smith was well known in his home community. He had been away from here at work about a year. He is survived by his parents, four sisters, Mrs. Harry Rogers, Newton, Mrs. J. M. Nebergall, north of the city, Mrs. Bessie Nefzieger, Douglass, Kans., Mrs. Guy Rutledge, Wellton, Ariz., and two brothers, Toy of Arlington, Kans., and Earl of Montevideo, [Chippewa Co.] Minn.
The tragedy is deeply deplored by all friends of the family, and it is the second similar fatal accident that occurred in the oil fields east of Newton within the past few days.
