Shotgun Wound Is Fatal To Hunter

The Newton Kansan
Saturday, November 15, 1952

A 50 year old Hutchinson man, formerly of Burrton, was fatally wounded this morning when a charge from a companion's shotgun struck him in the back of the head, while the two were duck hunting with two other people at a lake in the southwest corner of Harvey County. Sheriff W. K. Rogers stated that the man, Roy McGlachlin, died of the wound at about 11 o'clock this morning, at the Halstead Hospital. The accident occurred, he said, at about 8:30 thi smorning. McGlachlin was struck, the sheriff said, by a 12-guage shotgun charge from the gun of Harvey Story, of Wichita, at a distance of only a few feet. Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Trump of Ellsworth were the other members of the hunting party. Trump is the postmaster at Ellsworth. Rogers stated that the accident happened as McGlachlin raised up to shoot at a duck in the line of fire of Story's gun. Details given to the sheriff were that the four persons were sitting in a duck blind at a small lake, one and one-half miles south of the Patterson lake, in the southwest corner of the county. Sitting in the blind, from east to west in order were: Story, Mrs. Trump, Trump, and McGlachlin. A duck landed on the lake, just a few yards northwest of McGlachlin's end of the blind. Mrs. Trump was told to shoot the duck as it started to fly toward the blind. When she failed to shoot, Story raised and shot once, missing the duck. Just as he shot a second time, McGlachlin apparently raised up to shoot, after seeing that Story had missed with the first shot, and was struck full force in the back of the head by Story's gun blast. McGlachlin was taken to the Halstead Hospital by an ambulance from the Burrton Funeral home. The ambulance was called by Story from a farmhouse near the lake. After being pronounced dead by attending physicians, the body was removed to the Kaufman Funeral home in Halstead. McGlachlin, an oil field worker, recently moved to Hutchinson from Burrton, Sheriff Rogers stated. Mr. McGlachlin was brought to the Draper Funeral home this afternoon and funeral arrangements will be announced Monday. The Newton Kansan, Saturday November 15, 1952. Page 1.
