Memorial services were held at the Zion church, north east of Halstead for 1st Lt. Charles Cecil Spore, who died of wounds received in Germany on Sept. 15, 1944.

Charles Cecil Spore was born May 7, 1912 in Harvey county, Kansas. He went through grade school at District 15, completed high school at Halstead and attended Bethel College in Newton for one year. In 1939 he graduated from Kansas State College at Manhattan with a B. S. degree as a landscape architect. At the time he entered service he was operating his own landscape business in Omaha.

Cecil began his military service in May, 1942 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the corps of engineers at Ft. Belvoir, Va. His training and experiences in the army were varied, and served as a special service officer and instructor in several camps. He sailed in October for England where he remained for several months and landed in France two weeks after the invasion began. He was promoted to first lieutenant and received the Purple heart in recognition of his services during the Normandy campaign. Cecil's unit served with Hodges' First Army through France and Belgium into Germany. He was wounded Sept. 15th in Germany and reportedly died on Sept. 19th as a result of these wounds.

On Feb. 14, 1942, Cecil married Miss Wilma Grant, of Fairfield, Iowa. He is also survived by his patents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles spore, a brother Norman of Halstead, and a brother Arnold Spore and family of Newton besides other relatives and many friends.
