"Harvey County Pioneer Dead" -
A telegram received by D. H. Boyd, announced the death of his father-in-law, Thomas Jefferson Matlock, which occurred in California February 19, 1911.

The body was brought to Burrton on Number Two today for interment and the funeral will be held from the family home in Lake township tomorrow at one-thirty.

Mr. Matlock was one of the very early settlers in this county, coming to Burrton where he homesteaded a claim in 1871. He was a very prominent citizen of the county, taking an active interest in political and educational matters. Beside holding various positions of responsibility in the county, he at one time represented his county by serving two terms in the state legislature.
He located in Lake township.

He was an old soldier and was a member of Company E in the 19th regiment of Iowa Voluntary Infantry. He was severely wounded through the leg and was a prisoner at Shreport, La., and at Ft. Tyler and Marshall, Texas, being afterward exchanged. He participated in the siege of Vicksburg and at Fordouch Bayou and was in the battle at Prairie Grove. After being exchanged he joined his company at New Orleans and participated in the final battles of the Civil war at Goodes' Landing, the siege of Spanish Fort and the surrender at Mobile. As a result of his service in the Civil War, he became blind a few years lagter.

Burial was in the Burrton Kansas Cemetery.
