Wayne H. Akers, 74, Halstead, died Sunday November 10, 1996 at Columbia Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was born March 9, 1922 at Malcomb, Illinois, son of Henry James and Eva Ellen Reed Akers. A longtime areaa resident, he was retired from Boeing Military Aircraft Corp.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Newton, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Whitesell-Finnell Post #971, and the American Legion, Wayne G. Austin Post #2, both of Newton. He was also a member of the Ex-Prisoner of War Organization in Wichita. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a tech sergeant. During the war, he served as a prisoner of war for 15 months.

He married Mable May Akers at Newton on March 22, 1942. She died September 23, 1988.

Survivors: sons, Bill Akers, Seattle, Washington; Larry Akers and Bob Akers, both of Renton, Washington; daughters, Virginia Anderson, Newton and Carolyn Armendariz, Halstead; brother, Marvin Akers, Claremore, Oklahoma; sisters, Audrey Higgens, Dorothy Grochowsky and Joyce Miller, all of Newton; Arliss Kater, Emporia and Jeanne Sills, Tulsa, Oklahoma; 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence Akers and Howard Akers and two sisters, Louise Anduss and Lois Buller.

Funeral was Wednesday at the church. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery, Newton, with services conducted by the VFW and American Legion.
