Carl Raymond Sheffler, Jr., 78, Halstead, died Febroary 9, 2004 at Newton Medical Center. He was born February 16, 1925 at Burbank, California, son of Carl R. and Pearl Stahlheber Sheffler. He married Bonnie Lee Walton August 3, 1947 in the Presbyterian Church in Newton.

He was a lifelong resident of Harvey County. He served in World War II in the 36th Combat Engineering Division from 1943 to 1945. He landed on Anzio Beach in the European Theater. After the war, he returned to Halstead and graduated from Halstead High School in 1946. He was a retired Halstead City mail carrier, serving from 1950 to 1980.

He was active in the community, a past businessman in Halstead, owning Shef's Sales and Service and the Halstead Laundromat, and was a real estate broker. He operated Lake Willow north of Burrton for 14 years. He had been a city council member, served on the Halstead Volunteer Fire Department and was fire chief for a time; was a member of the Halstead Presbyterian Church, where he served as elder; was the Past Worthy Master of the Masonic Lodge, Halstead; was a member of the Halstead American Legion Post 231; was a past member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, Halstead, in which he completed all stations, served as Boy Scout leader; was a member of the Halstead Lions Club and the BPOE in Newton and had served as a volunteer van driver for Halstead Housing Authority since 1995.

Survivors: his wife, Bonnie, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Kim and Terry Sheffler and grandchildren, Amy & Scott, all of Halstead; brother, Eugene Sheffler, Hutchinson. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dale Sheffler.

Funeral services will be Thursday at the Church. Burial with military funeral rites will follow in the Halstead Cemetery.
