Ernest Clarence Johnson, 85, Halstead, died January 24, 1999 at Derby. He was born February 26, 1913 at Walton, the son of Fred and Viola King Johnson. He was a retired mechanic for Dey Farm Supply, Newton.

He married Jesse Winifred Payton, August 24, 1942 at San Diego, California. She survives. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Halstead, and a veteran of the U. S. Army in World War II and a recipient of the "Lifetime Achievement" award presented during the Old Settlers celebration several years ago.

Survivors: two sons, David Johnson, Mulvane and Roger Johnson, Wichita; daughters, Nancy Horton, Nickerson; Barbara Koehn, Santa Marta, Columbia, South America; Patricia Moffitt, Ft. Benning, Georgia; Diann Mason, Arkansas City; and Judy Handley, Wichita; a sister, Mildred Gilchrist, Hesston; 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, William Johnson and Harold Johnson and a sister, Edna Work.

Services were held Thursday, January 28 at the Methodist Church in Halstead with Rev. James Mardock. Burial was in the Halstead Cemetery.
