Bess Chapple, 104, Hesston, died Saturday, January 8, 2000 at Schowalter Villa, Hesston. She was born September 18, 1895 in Halstead to Henry George and Martha M. Phillips Chapple.

She attended the District No. 5 school in Harvey County and in 1914 graduated from Halstead High School. She taught three grades in Rice County from 1915 to 1916, Harmony School West of Halstead from 1916 to 1919, McClain school from 1919 to 1921 and Goodland school from 1921 to 1926. In 1926, she graduated from Wichita Business College. She worked for five years in Wichita for the Bitting Wholesale Jewelry Company and was secretary for Western Light fo 30 years, retiring in 1946 in Great Bend.

She was a member of the old Zion Evangelical United Brethren Church near Halstead.

Survivors: nephew, Leo Young, Halstead; a niece, Rena Honn, Arkansas City, Kansas. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Edith Young and Edna Chapple and three nephews.

Graveside services were Monday, January 10 at the Halstead Cemetery with the Rev. C. Kent Rogers presiding.
