Cars Ran Over Him

Joe Walton Meets An Awful Death

Fell Under the Wheels of a South Bound Train at Sedgwick this Morning - Body Horribly Mutilated

Joe Walton, the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. John Walton of Newton, met a horrible death this morning at Sedgwick.

The full particulars of his death are not known and probably never will be. A section man walking through the yards at Sedgwick about seven o'clock this morning found a human hand on the track. Walking further along he found other portions of a human body and the coroner at Newton was promptly notified. Dr. Abbey went to Sedgwick on No. 527 and gathered the parts of the body and the clothing, which were scattered along the track for three quarters of a mile. The body was horribly mutilated and entirely unrecognizable. By the aid of a letter found in the young man's coat, which was, strangely enough, not badly torn, the coroner learned the young man's identity and notified the parents here. An undertaker went down from Newton to bring the body here for burial.

Only theory exists as to how and when the young man met his death. He was not home for supper last evening and had told his parents he was going away to get work. He was seen here during the evening but not during the night. It is supposed that he went soutn on either No. 329 this morning or No. 17 and fell off the train at Sedgwick. So far as is known, no one saw the accident, not even the trainmen, and no one knew he was killed until the section man found the body. The coroner did not deem an inquest necessary.

Joe Walton was very well known in Newton. He was a sober and industrious boy and well liked by his associates. He worked on the Santa Fe as fireman for several years and later had railroad positions in the south, his last place being with the Katy at Muskogee. He had been home for about a month visiting. The greatest sympathy is felt for the bereaved parents and other relatives.
