Henry Clay Garten was born March 17, 1855 in Carlisle, Ind., and died Thursday, March 27 in the Santa Fe hospital at Topeka making him 86 years of age.

He was married on September 6, 1883 to Effie Whitman near Mayville, Mo., and lived in Newton for 57 years. To this union were born four children, all of whom survive. They are Nora Gray, Leta Turner and John Garten, all of Newton, and Blanche Dodds of Lawrence. There are also 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren, and four sisters, Mrs. Maggie Pistole, deceased, Mrs. Cora Bush of Albany, Mo., and Mrs. Luther Pistole of Uickering, Mo., and Mrs. Delia Hereford of Fairview, Kans.

Mr. Garten was an employee of the Santa Fe railroad for 36 years, was a member of the Odd Fellows fraternity for 51 years and of the Christian Church for 67 years. For the past several years, Mr. Garten had been unable to work but has kept his interest in things generally and has more and more concerned himself with spiritual things.

Funeral services for Mr. Garten were conducted Saturday afternoon, March 29, at the First Christian chuch with the pastor, Rev. Logan Martin, officiating. C.M. Chitty, M.R. Stauffer, Mrs. Archie Grimm and Mrs. Kenneth Carnahan sang "Lead Kindly Light" and Mrs. Carnahan and Mrs. Grimm sang "Lord, I Am Coming Home" and "When the Gates Swing Outward". Mrs. Orville Barbour accompanied at the organ. Pallbearers were Vesta Hall, Everett Morford, Ralph Parris, Curtis Garten, Fred Heckendorn and M.O. Seitz. Burial was in the family lot in Greenwood cemetery in charge of Duff and Son.
