Mary E. Velen, 78, of North Newton died Friday (Jan. 2, 1998) at Halstead Hospital.
Velen, a lifetime resident of Kansas and homemaker who enjoyed sewing, gardening and reading, lived in Neodesha, Hesston and Newton.
Velen was born Oct. 24, 1919, in Hesston to Moses B. and Ellen M. Landes Shenk. She married Lewis L. Humphrey Sr., in 1938, in Newton. They divorced. She married Reuben Velen on Aug. 24, 1964, in Miami, Okla. He died March 8, 1981.
She is survived by one son, Lewis L. Humphrey Jr. of Newton; two daughters, Mary Pearl Smith of Newton and Alice Hensley of North Bloomfield, Ohio; a brother, Paul Shenk of Carlise, Pa.; three sisters, Anna Mae Kelley of Hutchinson, Grace Brown of Denver and Ruth Unruh of Richey, Mont.; 10 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and five step grandchildren.
There will be no service and no visitation. He body will be donated to the University of Kansas Medical Center.
Memorials are suggested to the Kansas Lung Association and American Cancer Society, in care of Peterssen Funeral Home.
