Lois M. Shearer

Lois M. Shearer, 100, 200 S.W. 14th, died Saturday (July 25, 1998) at Friendly Acres Retirement Community.

She was born July 18, 1898, in Frederick to Olney and Elizabeth (Zuel) Monroe. She married George Shearer on June 14, 1930. He preceded her in death April 10, 1947.


She was a school teacher in Summerfield, Oswego and Carthage, Mo. She was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church, Kansas Retired Teachers Association, Newton Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Society and Order of the Eastern Star.

She earned both a bachelor of science and master of science from Emporia State University. She taught 24 years in Kansas and 15 years in Carthage, Mo.

Survivors include one daughter, Judy McCoy of Carthage, Mo.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. C. Kent Rogers from Salem United Methodist Church officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Lyons Cemetery in Lyons. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials have been established with Salem United Methodist Church in Newton and First United Methodist Church in Carthage, Mo., in care of the funeral home.
