NEWTON, Kan. (AP) — A teacher is dead after being hit by a car Tuesday west of Newton in Harvey County.
It happened around 4 p.m. Tuesday in the 2700
block of NW 12th Avenue. According to the Harvey County Sheriff's
Office, a 28-year-old woman was hit by a westbound car.
The 40-year-old woman who was driving the car
stopped, along with others who contacted 911. The victim was taken by
Harvey County EMS to Newton Regional Medical Center, where she was
pronounced dead.
She's been identified as 28-year-old Crystal
Stauffer of Newton. Stauffer was a physical education teacher at Santa
Fe Middle School in Newton. She worked for the district since 2010 and
was married last July.
Principal George Leary said the school district
is discussing options for helping students, parents and teachers get
grief counseling during the summer break.
The Sheriff's Office says the accident is still under investigation.
