Uriel Bernell Baldwin
1922 - 2015 | Obituary
Uriel Bernell Baldwin was born April
10, 1922, to Rev. William and Gertrude Wells McNeill in Upper Tract,
West Virginia. She passed away September 13, 2015, in Wichita, KS.
She was preceded in death by her
husband of 62 years, Dr. William J. Baldwin and grandson, David
Schaeffer.
Bernell is survived by her children,
Janice (Don) Schaeffer, Ozawkie, KS, Judy (Ron) Oliver, Wichita, KS,
Joyce (Jimmy) Denton, Hot Springs, AR, Phil (Peggy) Baldwin, Wichita,
KS and granddaughters Megan (Zach) Jones, Durango, CO and Erin
Baldwin (fiancé Rob Koehn) Wichita, KS.
Bernell married Bill, a ministerial
student, in 1940 following graduation from Republic High School,
Republic, KS. Together they served EUB and United Methodist
pastorates throughout Kansas for 45 years. She completed LPN training
at KU Medical Center, Kansas City, in 1962. Three months after
graduating Bernell was handpicked for the original nursing team at
the world's first monitored intensive care unit at Bethany Hospital.
She continued critical care nursing in Chanute, Topeka, Iola and
Halstead hospitals having earned her RN degree at the Stormont-Vail
Nursing School in Topeka.
Bernell loved her family though writing
and storytelling were a close second. She loved the KU Jayhawks, WSU
Shockers, and being Scottish. As a freelance writer for the Wichita
Eagle she enjoyed a fan base for her articles, short stories and two
novels, Ordination and Preacher Bill's Bats in the Belfry. Bernell
expressed her faith in Christ through social justice issues and
writings. Her favorite Bible verse, penned by another writer, Saint
Paul, was "…Whatever is true, whatever is right, whatever is
pure, whatever is lovely,…think about such things…Put it into
practice. And the God of peace will be with you." (Phillippians
4:8-9 NIV)
