Father Stephen R. Baxter, 66, pastor of
Sacred Heart Parish, Halstead, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at his residence in Halstead.
He was born Oct. 6, 1946, in Seattle, Washington to John Anthony
and Adele (Tremblay) Baxter. He was a Vietnam veteran, serving in the U.S.
Army. He attended Kansas University and was a graduate of Seattle
University and received a Licentiate in Canon Law from St. Pauls University,
Ottawa, Ontario. He was a member of the 4th Degree Assembly of the Knights of
Columbus, Chaplain of the Council and Assembly and was the Spiritual Director
For Cursillo.
Prior to coming to Halstead, he served St. Ignatius Parish,
Neodesha, and Sacred Heart Parish, Fredonia.
He is survived by brothers: Tony (Lorna) Baxter, Seattle,
Wash., Chris (Loren Westlund) Baxter, Choteau, Mont., Tim Baxter, Seattle,
Wash.; and a sister: Kathy (Charles) Christensen, Everett, Wash.
The Rosary will be said at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, at
Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Halstead. Mass of the Christian Burial will be 10
a.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, at St. Mary's Cathedral, Wichita, with Bishop
Michael Jackels Celebrant. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. at Ascension
Cemetery, Bel Aire. Memorials may be given to Sacred Heart Parish, in care of
Kaufman Funeral Home, Halstead.
