Victim Identified In Fatal Train Collision

The Harvey County Sheriff's Office has identified the woman killed and others who were injured in a collision with a train on Saturday.

Emergency crews from Harvey County, KHP Newton and Walton were called to the report of a car accident involving a train just after 12 p.m. on Saturday. A Dodge Intrepid driven by 19-year-old Taylor Sowell had collided with a westbound BNSF freight train.

Sowell died at the scene from massive head injuries. Her husband, 20-year-old Dylan Sowell, was critically injured and flown to Wesley. His condition has since improved, and he is currently listed in fair condition.

Taylor's Brother, 17-year-old Kyle Malek, was also hurt, suffering head injuries. He was transported by ambulance to Wesley and his current condition is unknown. All three are Harvey County residents.

The railroad cross where the accident occurred did not have flashing lights or gates.

A Kansas woman was killed and two others were seriously hurt when their car crashed into a train in Harvey County. It happened just before 12:15 p.m. Saturday at Northeast 48th Street and U.S. 50, about a mile southwest of Walton.

Harvey County Sheriff officials say the 19-year-old woman was driving northbound on Northeast 48th Street when she struck a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train that was traveling eastbound.

The woman died at the scene. Her 20-year-old husband was flown to a Wichita hospital in critical condition. Her 17-year-old brother was taken to a Wichita hospital by ambulance with serious injuries.

Investigators are working to determine what caused the woman to drive into the train. They say the railroad crossing did not have flashing lights or gates.

All of the victims were Harvey County residents. Their names have not been released pending family notifications.
