Dr. Phillip K. Hill
Dr. Phillip K. Hill, 80, passed away on Thursday (Oct. 14,
2010) at his home in Weston, Mo. after fighting a lengthy illness.
He was born on Oct 28, 1929, in Hamilton County, Iowa, to
Henry Oliver and Jenny (Skilbred) Hill and graduated high school in Webster
City, Iowa, in 1947. He received his bachelor of arts degree from St. Olaf
College of Northfield, Minn., in 1951 and his doctor of medicine degree at the
University of Iowa Medical School in 1956.
He married Carol Lundring on June 17, 1956, in Canby, Minn.
During medical school, Dr. Hill completed a year's
fellowship at The University of Iowa in the department of pathology.
He served his medical internship in Portland, Maine,
afterwards, serving his country in the U.S. Navy for three years. Following his
military discharge, Dr. Hill completed his residency training in internal
medicine at Kansas City General Hospital and became director of the Memorial
Diagnostic Heart Service, a research project under a grant from the University
of Missouri Regional Medical Program. Dr. Hill also taught a course in cardiac
care for nurses, and both endeavors reflected his love for research and
teaching.
During this tenure with the university, he held a three-year
cardiovascular grant from the Missouri Regional Medical Program and conducted a
three-month education tour in the cardiovascular department of Chicago
University.
Partnering with four other physicians, he opened the Shawnee
Mission Medical Clinic. In 1974, Dr. Hill moved his family to Newton and
practiced internal medicine and cardiology at Bethel Clinic in Newton and
Hertzler Clinic in Halstead. In 1980, he moved out of the area and served as a
physician at Fort Leavenworth, serving also as medical director for the federal
penitentiary in Leavenworth. His illness in later years brought him back to
research, as a study participant this time, at Mayo Clinic.
Phillip loved camping, touring the nation's national parks,
hiking, photography and shared his passions with his family.
Phillip married Connie Ewy in 1983 in Webster City, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers,
Oliver and James; and a sister, Ruth Hill.
He is survived by his wife Connie of the home; his son,
David (Sherry) Hill of Newton; his daughters, Krista Hill (Rembert Johnson) of
Abilene, Susan (Craig) Ihnen of West Des Moines, Iowa, Rachel Newell of Newton,
and Judy (Kevin) Winters of Andover; two stepsons, Russ Ewy (Kelly Graf) and
Rich Ewy, all of Wichita; one stepdaughter, Robyn (Doug) Newton of Madison,
Tenn.; two brothers, Russell (Karen) Hill of West Des Moines and Robert Hill of
Warsaw, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; and his former spouse, Carol of Newton.
Memorial was Monday for family and friends in Weston,
followed by cremation.
