Dr. Phillip K. Hill

Dr. Phillip K. Hill, 80, passed away on Thursday (Oct. 14, 2010) at his home in Weston, Mo. after fighting a lengthy illness.

He was born on Oct 28, 1929, in Hamilton County, Iowa, to Henry Oliver and Jenny (Skilbred) Hill and graduated high school in Webster City, Iowa, in 1947. He received his bachelor of arts degree from St. Olaf College of Northfield, Minn., in 1951 and his doctor of medicine degree at the University of Iowa Medical School in 1956.

He married Carol Lundring on June 17, 1956, in Canby, Minn.

During medical school, Dr. Hill completed a year's fellowship at The University of Iowa in the department of pathology.

He served his medical internship in Portland, Maine, afterwards, serving his country in the U.S. Navy for three years. Following his military discharge, Dr. Hill completed his residency training in internal medicine at Kansas City General Hospital and became director of the Memorial Diagnostic Heart Service, a research project under a grant from the University of Missouri Regional Medical Program. Dr. Hill also taught a course in cardiac care for nurses, and both endeavors reflected his love for research and teaching.

During this tenure with the university, he held a three-year cardiovascular grant from the Missouri Regional Medical Program and conducted a three-month education tour in the cardiovascular department of Chicago University.

Partnering with four other physicians, he opened the Shawnee Mission Medical Clinic. In 1974, Dr. Hill moved his family to Newton and practiced internal medicine and cardiology at Bethel Clinic in Newton and Hertzler Clinic in Halstead. In 1980, he moved out of the area and served as a physician at Fort Leavenworth, serving also as medical director for the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth. His illness in later years brought him back to research, as a study participant this time, at Mayo Clinic.

Phillip loved camping, touring the nation's national parks, hiking, photography and shared his passions with his family.

Phillip married Connie Ewy in 1983 in Webster City, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Oliver and James; and a sister, Ruth Hill.
