Helen Gertrude Higgs

Helen Gertrude Higgs, 93, passed away peacefully Monday (Dec. 3, 2007) at Newton Presbyterian Manor.

She was born on Jan. 26, 1914, in McDonald County, Mo., the daughter of Luther A. and Edna G. (Grimes) Cunningham.

She graduated from Anderson High School in Anderson, Mo.

She married Melvin T. Higgs on Oct. 25, 1934, in Anderson. He survives of Newton.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Newton for many years.

Helen and Melvin owned and operated Charlsen's Market in Newton from 1952 until retirement in the early 1970s.

Helen was a member of the Newton Garden Club and was well known for her green thumb. The club was credited for the Rose Garden in Military Park in Newton.

She also was a 50-year cancer survivor and held a membership with the American Cancer Society.

Other survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, John T. and Carol Higgs of Newton; a daughter and late husband, Marilyn J. and Jim Cadle of Olathe; a brother and wife, Jack E. and Becky Cunningham of Anderson; a sister and late husband, Ruth and Sid Grissom of Henderson, N.C.; a granddaughter and husband, Melinda and Tim O'Brien; a grandson and wife, James and Susan Cadle; a granddaughter and husband, Karen and Todd Friedeman; a grandson and wife, Travis and Kymberly Higgs; a grandson, Tyler Higgs; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and three sisters.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton, with family present from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Newton, with burial following at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Newton Presbyterian Manor in care of the funeral home.
