Two injury accidents involving pedestrians occurred on Main Street Tuesday. Less than an hour after an elderly woman was struck by a vehicle on the crosswalk at Broadway and Main and transported to Newton Medical Center with a leg injury, a second, fatal accident occurred at the cross walk at Seventh and Main.

The fatal accident was reported at 3:47 p.m. Tuesday.

According to a Kansas Highway Patrol report, a 2005 Trailblazer driven by 79-year-old Newton resident Robert Jackson was stopped at the traffic light on Seventh Street, facing westbound. When the light turned green, Jackson's vehicle turned left and struck 66-year-old Newton resident Kathryn R. Brown.

Brown suffered head trauma and was transported by ambulance to Wesley Medical Center in critical condition. She died later Tuesday night.

Newton Fire/EMS Battalion Chief Jerry Conyers said he didn't know all the details of the accident. He said Fire/EMS has a protocol that if there's a trauma involved with a patient in critical condition, the national standard is to get the patient to a level one trauma center within an hour of the accident.

He said Fire/EMS crews were on the scene for about seven minutes.

In the non-fatal accident, a mid-sized vehicle driven by 51-year-old Newton resident Shirley Dox was turning onto Main Street from Broadway when her vehicle struck 87-year-old Ruby Winskey of Halstead. Winskey was transported to Newton Medical Center in non-serious condition.
