Mary Margaret Nickel
Mary Margaret Nickel died Tuesday (July 21, 2009) at her
residence in Newton.
She was born on July 8, 1926, in Rural Union, Miss., to
Walter and Linda (Gustafson) Germany. They preceded her in death.
Mary attended Anderson University and then taught school in
Bogue for a year to save money so she could to go nursing school.
She graduated from the Wesley School of Nursing in Wichita
with her registered nurse license and worked there several years. She also
worked as a nurse at Friendly Acres Nursing Home for 20 years and Parkside
Nursing Home in Hillsboro for 10 years.
She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Wichita and
was very active in the church and attended several Bible studies. She was
honored to go on a mission trip to the Ukraine when she was 70 years old.
Mary was an avid reader and shared that love by volunteering
for a reading program at the Newton library. She supported several Christian
charities and will be remembered as a devoted grandmother to her nine
grandchildren.
She is survived by three children, son Daniel and Lori
Nickel of Newton, son David and Barbara Nickel of Cairo, Neb., and daughter
Mary and Jim Hall of Tempe, Ariz.; husband, Fred Nickel of Grand Island, Neb.;
sister, Bobbie and Kenneth Holsman of Bogue; sister, Gussie and the Rev. Paul Ninemire
of Oak Grove, La.; and nine grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by a son, Michael Nickel, and
a brother, Carl Germany.
Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Petersen
Funeral Home in Newton, with family present from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Christ Lutheran Church
in Wichita. Burial will be Monday afternoon in rural Palco following a
graveside service.
Memorials have been set up for the Wycliffe Bible
Translators Inc., Feed the Children Christian program and World Vision. Donate
an animal in Mary's name instead of flowers and help multiple families with
your gifts.
