Freeman J. Miller

Freeman J. Miller, 91, passed away Sunday (June 14, 2009) at his home in Hesston.

He was born on July 16, 1917, in Crystal Springs, the youngest son of James and Emma Brobst Miller. They preceded him in death.

He graduated from Harper High School. As a young man, he received Christ and joined the Crystal Springs Mennonite Church near Crystal Springs. After retirement, he joined Garden Community Church near Hesston.

On Aug. 19, 1937, he married Odena Yoder in Hutchinson. Together, they owned and operated Miller Mercantile Co. at Crystal Springs for more than 40 years. In the 1950s, they added a locker and meat-processing service to the family business begun in 1910 by his dad. Freeman also farmed and raised cattle and hogs for most of his adult life.

In 1992, they retired to Schowalter Villa in Hesston, and Odena passed away suddenly on March 12, 1993.

He met Evelyn Zerger Stucky, and they were married on Nov. 25, 1994. She survives of the home.

He is survived by a daughter, Maris Schroeder, and husband, Donald, of Moundridge; a son, Edwin, and wife, Carol, of Kalona, Iowa; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He also is survived by Evelyn's family, including Lyle Stucky and wife, Linda, of Osler, Saskatchewan, Canada; Lynn Stucky and wife, Lori, of Sanger, Texas; Larry Stucky and wife, Cindy, of McPherson; Denise Siemens and husband, Allen, of McPherson; Donna Sharp and husband, Max, of Little Rock, Ark.; Danielle Suderman and husband, Dwight, of McPherson; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by his siblings, Mae Miller, Beulah Zimmerman, Lela Naffziger, Ola Hooley, Norman Miller, Forrest Miller and an infant sister.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Moundridge Funeral Home in Moundridge, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Garden Community Church in rural Hesston.

Burial will follow at 3 p.m. at Crystal Springs Mennonite Church Cemetery near Crystal Springs.

The family requests memorials to the Schowalter Villa Good Samaritan Fund in care of the funeral home.
