Icy roads blamed for fatality in accident
A 58-year-old Hillsboro woman was killed in a car
accident on the slick roads Friday afternoon.
Sharon 'Kay' Chamberlain, 58, of Hillsboro was a
passenger in a 2001 Chevy Prism driven by her husband Donald, 61.
A 2004 Chevy Trailblazer driven by Chelsea Reiswig,
27, of Hillsboro was southbound on Indigo Road near 120th Street, which is
about 7 miles south of Hillsboro.
The Trailblazer lost control on the slick road and
slide sideways into the front of the northbound Prism, according to a news
release from the Marion County sheriff.
The Trailblazer slide into the east ditch and rolled
onto its side.
Kay Chamberlain was pronounced dead at the scene,
according to the news release.
Donald Chamberlain was transported by ambulance to
Newton Medical Center and later transferred to Via Christi Regional Medical
Center-St Francis campus.
Donald Chamberlain received injuries to his ribs,
wrist and foot and could be released as soon as today, according to a source
close to the family.
Reiswig was transported by Peabody ambulance to
Newton Medical Center. No information on her condition was available as of
press time.
Kay Chamberlain was a graduate of Newton High School
and had been an employee of Nye and Nye Law firm for 22 years.
She was a member of the American Legion Riders of
Hillsboro, TOPS KS No. 162 of Newton and participated in the Relay for Life and
Walk Across Kansas.
Doris and Jim Miller, who were friends from
Chamberlain's TOPS group described Chamberlain as person who was always happy
and outgoing.
'She was amazing,' Doris Miller said. 'She always
brightened up the room when she walked in.'
Pennie Bartmess of Newton, a 20-year friend of
Chamberlain, said Chamberlain always put her family first.
'If she wasn't talking about her own children, it
was her sisters and brothers and the stories of family reunions held every
year. She loved her family. And she was a true friend,' Bartmess said.
Bartmess said Chamberlain was a member of a local
'lunch bunch' group of women who had all worked in local law offices and
gathered regularly to talk and have lunch.
'We'd talk about work, family, current events, and
sometimes conversations would get a little heated. We laughed a lot and had so
many good times, and a few times we would share tears if one of us was having a
bad time. She will be greatly missed by the lunch bunch,' she said.
Chamberlain also is survived by her mother, four
children, four brothers, two sisters and three grandchildren.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First
Missionary Church in Newton.
