Gerald 'Jerry' Abney

Gerald "Jerry" Abney, 66, died Wednesday (Dec. 21, 2005) at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospital at Via Christi - St. Francis in Wichita.


He was born Aug. 10, 1939, to Clyde A. and Hulda E. (Ollenburger) Abney in Pueblo, Colo. They preceded him in death.

Upon graduation from Newton High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy as a radioman. His various tours of duty were Japan and aboard the USS Hamilton CO. After his discharge in August 1960, he worked numerous jobs before going to work for the United States Post Office as a letter carrier, where he made lifelong friends on many routes. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, Branch No. 201, serving in various offices. He retired from the Post Office as a lettercarrier in 1992. Jerry worked for Harvey County West Park bait shop after his retirement.

Survivors include: a son, Jeff C. and wife Cinda Abney of Hutchinson; a daughter, Natalie K. (Abney) Shanklin and husband Craig of Newton; grandchildren, Ty Abney of Hutchinson and Cammi and Cody Palmer of Newton; and step-grandchildren, Iris Shanklin of Seattle and Josh Shanklin of Florence.

Visitation will be until 9 p.m. today with family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Church of Christ with the Rev. William Hickerson officiating.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.

Memorials have been established with Harvey County West Park in care of the funeral home.
