Phyllis E. Funk

Phyllis E. Funk, 79, of Newton, passed away Sunday (May 4, 2008) at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis campus in Wichita.

She was born Feb. 12, 1929, to John and Maria (Kline) Hanneman. They preceded her in death.

She married Robert 'Bob' Funk, and he survives of the home.

She was a graduate of Tabor College in Hillsboro.

She was a charter member of Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Newton, where she was a member of the Martha Ruth Circle and an active member of the church choir.

She retired after 31 years at the Harvey County Extension Office, and she also worked as a bookkeeper for First National Bank and Eastgate Lanes in Newton.

Phyllis was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Organization, where she served as president in 1989 and was the B.P.W. woman of the year in 1992. She was The Newton Kansan Woman of the Year in 1992. She also served as a Republican precinct committeewoman and volunteered with the Mother's Night Out.

Phyllis had a love for music and was a member of the Treble Clef Club, where she served as president from 1981 to 1982. She also was a member of the Sweet Adelines singing group.

Phyllis greatly looked forward to spending time with her many friends and loving family.

Other survivors include sons, Jon and Mary Funk of Manhattan, Lyle and Debbie Funk of Dayton, Ohio, and Mike Funk of Houston; grandsons, Josh Garcia of Manhattan, Nathan Garcia of Manhattan, Ryan Walter of Dayton, and Jaren Walter of Dayton; granddaughter, Linsay Funk of Dayton; and great-grandson, Kaleb Walter of Dayton.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, with family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Heights UMC, with Pastor Donna Friesen and the Rev. Carolyn Ryder of the church officiating.

Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Haven of Rest Cemetery in Hillsboro.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Heights UMC's music department in care of the funeral home.
