Historic Oregon Newspapers East Oregonian, Pendleton, Umatilla, Oregon

MINER'S BROKEN RIB PIERCES HIS HEART
Reno, Nev., July 20--While in Reno last night J. M. Ryan, Treasurer of the Pittsburg Liberty mine at Masonic received news by telegraph of the tragic death of his partner and friend, J. S. Phillips.
Mr. Phillips, who was president of the company was exploring the mine in company with Superintendent Shear, of the mine and a contractor. They walked into a tunnel and Phillips in an unguarded moment stumbled into an upraise, falling a distance of 23 feet, breaking a rib, which pierced his heart. He was dead when his companions descended to help him.
The tradegy spread a pall of gloom over the camp, as Phillips was well liked and Mr. Byran, who was an old friend and companion of the victim, was greatly shocked over the receipt of the sad news.
