Obituary

Howard James Schroeder, 91, passed away on Thursday (Nov. 22, 2018) at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.

He was born Oct. 25, 1927, in Newton to Paul and Ruth (Reusser) Schroeder and began living on the farm that he would eventually own in the early 1940s. In 1949, he met Eldred Bachman at a skating party and married her on March 3, 1950.

Howard took over the farm from his father in 1961 and became the third generation of the family to work that land, a span of time that is now at 110 years. Howard was well-known to the many grocery stores, restaurants, care homes and individual families in the area that he delivered eggs to. In addition to chickens, Howard raised sheep and cattle, but after 68 years he sold the last of his herd and said he was "officially retired."

Howard was an active member of Garden Community Church. In 2008, Howard and Eldred moved to Schowalter Villa, where he was a member of the Spiritual Life committee for several years.

Howard is survived by his daughters, Rita (Terry) Ullum of Halstead and Denise (Tim) Hollingshead of Wichita; daughter-in-law, Evelyn Fisher of Wichita; sister-in-law, Aline Bachman of Hesston; 10 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eldred; son, Eldon; brother, Robert; and infant brother, Richard.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday (Nov. 28, 2018) at Garden Community Church, Hesston. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 27, 2018) at Schowalter Villa, with family to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Garden Community Church Missions (for Bibles in church planting in Brazil), in care of Miller-Ott Funeral Home, P.O. Box 32, Hesston, KS 67062.
