Donald Coons

Donald Coons, 78, died Sunday (July 8, 2007) at his residence in Newton. He was born on April 6, 1931, in Yukon Co. Mo. to Bea (Swearingin) and George Coons. He enlisted in the United States Army, and served during the Korean War. On June 3, 1950, he married Betty Jo Miller at Sylvia Church of Christ in Sylvia. He worked for the Hesston Corporation (now AGCO) for 38 years before he retired from his supervisor position in the machine shop. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post No. 971 and the American Legion Post No. 112 in Newton. He also was a member of the First Christian Church in Newton. He was very active throughout his lifetime. He coached little league baseball, and also played on a semi-pro baseball team. He was a avid bowler, earning many awards. He was inducted into the National Seniors Bowling Hall of Fame and the Newton Bowling Hall of Fame.

He was a weekly golfer and also enjoyed fishing, craft work, and working in his yard. He was a giving and caring man, and was recognized for his support to the St. Jude Children's Hospital and the American Cancer Society. He was known and loved by many, all of whom will miss him greatly.

Survivors include a daughter, Kim and Gary Buckle of Newton; a son, Douglas Coons of Newton; a brother, Neil Coons of Ashgrove, Mo.; sisters, Glendola Shepard of Okla., Beverly Kyle of Ashgrove, Mo., Brenda LaRose of Arkansas, and Linda De Flic of New Orleans, La.; grandsons, Matthew Coons of Nevada, Mo., Mickey Coons of Fairfield, Ohio; and a granddaughter, Charli Buckle of Newton.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; a son, Kelly Coons and step-father, Jack Swearingin.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home Chapel in Newton with family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church in Newton. Burial will be at Peace Creek in Sylvia.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.
