Winifred Phares

OXFORD - Winifred Phares, 85, of Oxford, died Tuesday (April 4, 2006) at Riverview Manor and Village in Oxford. She was born Aug. 29, 1920, to Elmer and Lula (Lightle) Woodward in Melverne. Winnie was raised and attended school in Osborne. Winifred was united in marriage with Harold J. Phares in December 1943 in Newton. She was a long time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newton. She worked in housekeeping at the Christian Home and the Axtell Christian Hospital in Newton. 

Winnie was known as a good cook and dearly loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. After moving to Oxford in 2001, she became a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oxford.

Survivors include: three sons, Mike Phares and wife Debi of Oxford, Eddie Phares and wife Tammy of Newton and Randy Phares and wife Tish of El Dorado; two daughters, Debbie (Phares) Thaden and husband John of Kodak, Tenn., and Cindy (Phares) Estrada of Dallas, Texas; a brother, Don Woodward of Ottawa; 17 grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Harold J. Phares in 1980; a son, Donnie Phares in 1967; a brother, Earl Woodward in 1992; and a grandson, Elijah Estrada.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at the Oxford Funeral Service in Oxford.

Prayer vigil and rosary will be held 7:30 p.m. Friday at St. Mary's in Oxford.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oxford Father Bernie Gorges officiating.

Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.
Memorials have been established with the Riverview Manor Nursing Home and Village of Oxford in care of Oxford Funeral Service, 104 N. Sumner Oxford, KS 67119.
