Helen McKelvey, 85, of Newton died Thursday (Jan. 19, 2006) at Newton Presbyterian Manor.

Helen O. (Pickett) McKelvey was born Oct. 16, 1920, in Horton. Her parents, Edith and Lee Maples, preceded her in death. On July 25, 1943, she married John F. McKelvey in Newton. He died Oct. 10, 2000.

Helen enjoyed crocheting, making afghans, cooking and reading a good book. She traveled with John to Europe, many tourist attractions in the U.S. and numerous times to her favorite city, Las Vegas.

Survivors include daughters Barbara (McKelvey) Spillane of Newton and Vickie (McKelvey) Reierson of Littleton, Colo.; brother Howard Pickett of Quincy, Wash.; sister Rosa Lee Greer of Newton; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Gaylord Maples, and a sister, Ethel Mae Pickett.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Peter Hartman officiating.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Presbyterian Manor.
