Bonnie Selanders

Bonnie Selanders, 89, died Wednesday (Feb. 8, 2006) at Presbyterian Manor in Newton. She was born March 21, 1916, to Joseph and Lena (Brown) Selanders in Westfalia. They preceded her in death. She received B.A. and B.S. degrees from the State Teachers College of Emporia State in 1937. She later received her master's degree in 1940 at the State Teachers College of Emporia State. Bonnie taught in Dighton and Augusta for one year before moving to Newton in 1944. She taught at Newton High School from 1944 until her retirement in the mid 1980s. She was a well-respected and excellent teacher who taught English, Latin and assisted with debate and many school activities.

She traveled extensively throughout the world but especially Europe. She visited many Greek and Roman ruins and often shared slides of her travels with friends and students.

Recently she had lived at Newton Presbyterian Manor until the time of her death.

She was a long-term member of First United Methodist Church in Newton and was a past member of the Kansas Education Association.

Survivors include: friends, Les Monroe of Newton and Amy Wong of Newton; and nieces, Shirley Wall of Parsons and Jean Dydell M.D. of Seattle.

She also was preceded in death by: an infant brother; cousins, Forrest Selanders and Lawrence Selanders; and an uncle, Jay Selanders.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Petersen Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will be in Westfalia Public Cemetery in rural Westfalia.
