Dr. Ivan Howard Carper

1928 - 2020

Dr. Ivan Howard Carper was born on October 3, 1928 in Lebanon, KS and went peacefully to be with the Lord at age 92 on December 8, 2020 in Westminster, CO. The son of Esther (Noble) Carper and Edward Paul Carper, Ivan was raised in Lebanon, KS. He graduated from Lebanon High School in 1946 and Kansas State University in 1951. After serving in the U.S. Air Force and then the U.S. Army, Ivan attended the University of Kansas School of Medicine, graduating in 1959, later completing credentials in General Surgery.

Ivan married Norma McKim in 1952. They had five children. Norma and Ivan were married for 66 years prior to Norma's passing in 2018.

After the completion of Ivan's medical education and residencies in Lawrence and Kansas City, KS, the family lived in Halstead and Newton, KS, where Ivan practiced medicine as a general practitioner at Hertzler Medical Center and as a general surgeon at Axtell Clinic for nearly 30 years. Ivan and Norma retired to Colorado Springs, CO in 1993 and moved to Covenant Living retirement home in Westminster, CO in 2014.

Ivan was active in medical missions throughout his career, participating in international humanitarian trips to Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Guatemala. He was interested in history, music and sports, and was an avid KU basketball fan who rarely missed a game broadcast in more than 60 years. He will be remembered for his love and support for his family, his deep concern for the health and wellbeing of others, his generosity, and his keen sense of humor.

Ivan is survived by his five children and their spouses,Dennis and Michelle Friesen-Carper of Saint Paul, MN, Robin and Tom Kluge of Lawrence, KS, Mike and Billy Mulford-Carperof Austin, TX, Kristin and Mark Trollinger of Charlotte, NC, and Jonathan and Dasha Carper of Denver, CO, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and his sister Verda Franklin of Smith Center, Kansas, and brother Owen Carper of North Newton, Kansas.

A private burial ceremony will be held at the Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, CO. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. More information can be found at www.coloradocrematory.com.
