Service to Honor Gulf War Victim
A memorial service for an Oklahoman killed in the Persian Gulf War will be Sunday in Adair.
Army Warrant Officer George Swartzendruber, 25, was killed Feb. 27, 1991, when his Blackhawk helicopter was shot down by Iraqi forces. He was with E Company, 1st Infantry at Fort Riley, Kan.
Born in Kansas, he lived five years in Tulsa. His parents, Richard and Naomi Swartzendruber, live in Adair.
Sunday has been proclaimed "George Swartzendruber Day" by Gov. Frank Keating. Several dignitaries are expected to attend the 3 p.m. ceremony at the ballpark.
Also, officers of the Desert Storm Justice Foundation will participate. After the service, a foundation official will discuss recently received evidence of chemical attacks during the war.
The foundation is a nonprofit organization organized to educate the public on health problems affecting Desert Storm veterans and family members, to provide information concerning health and Veterans Affairs issues, and to provide support.
