Law Enforcement Makes Arrest After Dark

Harvey County Sheriff Department

A man successfully evaded local law enforcement, turning off his lights as he fled down dirt roads.  But he was arrested shortly after for fleeing, traffic violations, as well as a DUI.

Around 11:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 7, a Newton police officer entering northbound on Interstate I-135 clocked a vehicle traveling more than 100 miles per hour.  The officer pursued in the chase, and the Harvey County Sheriff?s Department ended up assisting.  According to police reports, the driver exited onto Highway 50 and turned eastbound on N. 24th Street, turning off his vehicle?s lights as he drove.  Officers attempted to follow the dust from the vehicle but eventually lost it after a few miles.

Newton Police Lt. Scott Powell said the sheriff?s department was able to match up the description of the vehicle to a possible owner, whose address was in Walton. They went to the address, found the vehicle and were let into the house by the suspect?s father, where they made an arrest. Police arrested Jonathan McDonald, 24, of Walton on pending charges including fleeing and eluding arrest, driving under the influence, driving a vehicle without an interlock device, driving with an open container, possession of marijuana, failure to yield at a stop sign, speeding and unsafe turning or stopping.
