Cummings, John A.

The Newton Kansan

John A. Cummings,well known throughout the county and especially in Newton, passed away this morning at 4 o'clock at his home at 507 west Broadway, after a lingering illness. His health had been failing for over a year. He suffered with asthmatic affliction and later cirrhosis of the liver, which was the cause of his death. Mr. Cummings was a familiar figure on the streets of Newton for many years, being the city marshal, and scarcely a man, woman or child but knew him. About the month of March his visits to town ceased, with perhaps an occasional one when riding, and later he became bed-fast, and for the past two months had gradually lost vitality. Mr. Cummings was born at Alexandria, Ind., July 4,1860. He came to Newton, when he was a boy of 16 years with an older brother who departed this life several years ago. He was united in marriage to Miss. Opal L. Prouty, October 7, 1885, who with four children survive him. His oldest son, Thad, is in Los Angeles and Gladys, John Jr., and Morris are at the family home in Newton. The funeral service will be conducted by Rev. R. P. McPherson, and will be held at the residence at 507 West Broadway interment will be in Greenwood. The Newton Kansan.
