Irene Knowles, 84, a retired sales person for Delano Granite Monuments Co., died Friday (Jan. 29, 1999) at Via Christi Regional Medical Center -- St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

She was born May 16, 1914, in Newton to Joseph and Augusta Weigand. She married Oscar W. Phillips Sept. 5, 1934, in Wellington. He died Jan. 15, 1978. She then married Willard W. Knowles in April 1979 in Wichita. He died Dec. 23, 1992.

She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary of Newton and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary of Newton. She was a former Harvey Girl for the Fred Harvey Restaurant in Newton, and was a salesperson for J.C. Penney's.

Survivors include a son, Marvin Phillips Sr.of Marion; a sister, Ruth Edwards of Portland, Ore.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Weigand; three sisters, Wilhelmina Prouty, Ruby Kirkpatrick and Dorothy Cummings; a half-sister, Ethel Kabler; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Alden Dick officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. The family will greet friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials to Union Rescue Mission and the American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home
