Born at Covey Hill, Havelock township, Huntington county, Quebec, Canada.With his parents he moved to Illinois, then later to Iowa, coming on to Kansas, arriving in this state in the autumn of 1870, after immigrating from Canada in the 1850's

He was one of the charter members of the United Presbyterian congregation of Newton, Kansas.

He married Ida M. Feeley, July 17, 1894. Three children, Robert John Cowans (1895-1989), Married, Zillah Irene Ready (1903-1933), November 22, 1924

Nancy Elderene Cowans (1898-1995) Married, Charles Dill Knox (1891-1977) December 21, 1919

Harriet "Hattie" May Cowans (1906-1981) married Henry Allen Roadenbaugh (1901-1959) November 15, 1924
