Ethel Mae Coble Souder was born February 28, 1887 on a farm, near Putnam, south of Newton in Harvey County, Kansas. She died at the General Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri at 5:40 p. m. on March 12, 1949, a victim of a tragic automobile accident. She lived but a few hours after it occurred, without regaining consciousness. Her son Norvin and niece and nephew, Lucille and Kemit Oakes were with her at her passing.

Ethel Mae Souder lived in and around Newton all of her life. She was married to James Byron Souder on September 2, 1912 and only one son, Byron Norvin Souder, survives.

Two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Rex C. Shafer, Mrs. P. W. Oakes and M. H. Coble and a great number of other relatives and a host of friends mourn her passing.

Since the departure of her husband, April 6, 1944, Mrs. Souder had lived alone at the home, 411 East Eighth street, Newton, Kansas.

She was a member of the Presbyterian church and took an active part in its various organizations. She also association with the Entre Nous Social Club, Daughters of 1812 and various other groups of her friends.

Mere words cannot describe the wonderful philosophy which Ethel Souder had. Her unselfishness, self denial, graciousness and love were given to all. The untimely passing of this wonderful Mother, leaves relatives and friends grief stricken.

Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church, Newton, Kansas on Tuesday morning March 15, 1949 at 10:00 o'clock, with Dr. George W. Nelson officiating. Mrs. Lenard Nelson sang, "Be Still My Soul" and "My God and I". She was accompanied at the pipe organ by Mrs. E. C. McBurney.

Casket Bearers included Messrs. H. C. Willis, Roy Stauffer, Charles Bachmann, R. J. Clark, Fred Puttroff and J. M. Veazey.

Entombment was made in the family crypts, Greenwood Abbey, Newton, Kansas by Rex. M. Moody of the Moody's Funeral Home.
