Brown, Jemima



Jemima Jane Hickerson, wife of the late George W. Brown was born in Washington County, Kentucky, October 20, 1837. Was married to George W. Brown, April 30, 1856. To this union were born eight children, all of whom survive but one, Waller S. having died in 1883. The children surviving the mother are Julian Brown, Newton, W. E. Brown, Newton, Mrs. George Harvey, Hardtner, Kansas, Mrs J.W. Phillips, Walter, Minnie, and Mrs. J. F. Karr all of Newton.

Mrs. Brown was converted at the age of 10 years and united with the Baptist church at the age of 12. She has been a Baptist faithful and consistent through all these years.

The family came to Harvey county in 1880, living for several years on the farm south of town. Later they moved to Newton where they lived for 28 years. Since the death of husband 12 years ago, Mrs. Brown has been in failing health; but was confined to her bed only three weeks before her death, which occured Friday morning 4 o'clock February 23rd. She suffered much, but she endured with great fortitude. Her affliction was sancified to her and she died in triumph with the song of victory on her lips. Surrounded by her children those who knew and loved her best, she took her departure with thise triumphant words on her lips: "Be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee the crown of life." Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.

The funeral services were held at the First Baptist church Feb. 26 at 2:30 p.m., conducted by the pastor, Rev. Sam Bristow, assisted by her former pastor, Rev. W. A. Elliott of Ottawa, Kansas, and her body was borne by her sons and sons-in-law to its last resting place in Greenwood cemetery.

Cause of death was apoplexy
