Mrs. Susan Martha Phillips, daughter of Jemima Jane (Hickerson) Brown and George W. Brown was born October 14, 1863 in Meade County, Ky., and died suddenly Wednesday afternoon at about 1:30 at her home at 265 East Fourth of an acute heart attack.

She came to Harvey County in 1880 with her parents and was united in marriage to James W. Phillips March 28, 1883. In the winter of 1897 she and her husband were converted and joined the Baptist church at Putman, later transferring thier membership to the First Baptist church of Newton.

To this union were born six children, all of whom survive but two; Anna J. having died in 1924 and Wilbur P. in 1937. Mr. Phillips passed away February 7, 1924. The children surviving are: Mrs. Rose Ella Gingrass of Route 5, Newton, Leslie C. Phillips of Sedgwick; Joe T. Phillips of Route 1, Sedgwick, Mrs. Mollie Reber of Route 3, Newton, near McLains, and Mrs Wilber P. Phillips, daughter-in-law. Also surviving are two sisters, Miss Minnie Brown and Mrs. Janie Karr and sister-in-law Mrs. W.E. Brown, all of Newton, besides 11 grand children and two great grandchildren and other relatives and many friends.

Mrs. Phillips was a mother who was greatly devoted to her home and family and she will be greatly missed in the family circle and in her circle of friends. Her memory will be cherished by those who knew her best.


Funeral services were held Saturday, January 13 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist church with Rev. U. V. White in charge, assisted by Rev. C. F. Hartmann. A quartette from the church choir comosed of Mrs. Virgil Waldorf, Mrs Elvira Thrap, Calvin Ervin and Ed Marshall sang "In the Garden" and "No Night There." They were accompanied by Mrs. S. S. Klassen. Pallbearers were, John Schaeffer, Tom Marriosn, John Cowan, Ray Watts, James Briggs and Leon Howell. Burial was made in the family lot in Greenwood cemetery by directors of Moody Hinitt Funeral Home.
