Tuttle, Gilford



Parents Benjamin and Gatsy Fox Tuttle.
His father died in the 1830's in North Carolina, burial unknown.

March 19, 1902. Gilford Tuttle an old and highly respected citizen passed away this morning at 1;30 o'clock Mr. Tuttle was not quite 76 years of age at the time of his death. He was a pioneer settler of the county, making his home for years on what is now the Adolph Hay farm east of Newton in Newton township. He led an active, vigorous life until the affirmatives of old age laid hold upon him, since which time he has been a patient sufferer. He is survived by a wife and six children, four of whom are daughters and two sons. The daughters are Mrs. B. Powell of the city, Mrs. Ellen Fancher of Mead county, and a third in Canton and a fourth in Missouri. The sons are Scott, who lives four miles east of the city on twelfth street and Miles who lives in Strawn. Mr. Tuttle was an old soldier, having served through the war in an Iowa regiment. He was a faithful and consistent member of the Christian church. His was a rugged, sturdy character which commanded the respect of his friends and all with whom he came in contact. The funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock at the family home, 304 West Twelfth street, Rev. L. W. Wiles of the Christian church officiating. The body will be laid to rest in the city cemetery.
