Walton, Kenneth



Kenneth T. Walton, 92, died Saturday (Nov. 13, 2004) at Newton Presbyterian Manor. He was born Jan. 18, 1912, to Fred and Evelyn (Tourtillott) Walton. They preceded him in death. He married Signa Maxine Slater Brandt Oct. 4, 1931, in Halstead. She survives of Newton. At 17, he started driving a bread truck for Satourious Bakery. His route took him east of Newton to towns reaching out as far as Cassody and Matfield Green. In his early years, he loved to golf, hunt and fish. As his family grew, he spent time with them camping, fishing and boating on nearby lakes. At age 31, he changed professions and went to work for the Santa Fe Railroad as a switchman. He spent the next 31 years at that profession as a switchman in the Newton rail yard until his retirement May 25, 1974. He continued to camp and fish and always grew a vegetable garden. Tomatoes were his favorite. Other survivors include: a son, Robert E. Walton of Hesston; two daughters, Susan Slater and Bron Green, both of Albuquerque , N.M.; a sister, Evelyn Sinclair of Wichita; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be until 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, all at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Cemetery Mausoleum with the Rev. Bill Hickerson. Memorials have been established with Hospice Care of Kansas in care of the funeral home.
